• Re-imagine data protection and management

Authored by Ripu Bajwa, Director & GM – Data Protection Solutions, Dell Technologies

One thing that is constant in the present era is the proliferation of data. As we are transitioning towards a digital economy, we are witnessing a data revolution across the world. Moreover, the evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) is laying down a concrete path for more data that is interconnected. According to a recent Gartner report, 5.8 billion enterprises and automotive IoT endpoints will be in use in 20201. This means that billions of things will be interconnected owing to the connection between the ever-increasing amount of data across geographically distributed applications, clouds, organizations and customers.

Today, many organizations across the globe have already started realizing the value of their data. In a study by Dell EMC Global Data Protection Index, it was found that 92% companies see the potential value that data holds, while 36% see data as extremely valuable and are currently monetizing it2. The influx of interconnected data, the increase in the number of devices and the enhancements in multi-cloud environments are further increasing the probability for data threats.

As data is becoming the new currency in the digital economy, organizations in India are swiftly transforming into data-driven businesses. On an average, organizations in India are managing 6.42 PB of data today, as compared to 2.79 PB in 20163. The Indian businesses understand the value of data more than their global counterparts and are monetizing it, hence the need to secure and protect data in a cost effective and methodical manner becomes even more important today.

What CIOs and CISO’s have to say on data protection in the ‘Data Age’

At the recently conducted CrowdChat, the participating CIOs and CISOs had shared some challenges related to data security and what they think should be done to protect the data. Some of the points discussed were:

    • With data rapidly moving towards the cloud, organizations, need to establish integrated strategies to keep the data safe from cyber threats - regardless of where the data resides

    • Implementation of AI and ML to alter and augment the way organizations gather, process and protect the massive proliferation of data

    • Gathering data from various resources and using data analytics to study the pattern of fraudulent activities can help to implement an effective data protection strategy

    • CIO or CISO should deploy advance management of data, like realizing the data classification level, deploying data security/ privacy policy and keeping it safe in every environment

    • To identify data risks, organizations must realize where the sensitive data is, who is accessing it and how is it being used

    • Complying with GDPR and identifying data hacks, and the necessary steps to keep the data secured by notifying appropriate national bodies

    • The cruciality for businesses to have control over the data privacy protection, in order to protect it from any kind of deceptive online attacks

So, in a nutshell, to stay ahead in the competition and to thrive in today’s interconnected data age, organisations must now reassess their data protection strategy and manage data in every environment. Also, I feel that there is a daunting responsibility on technology companies to not just innovate in data mining and analysing tools but data protection applications too.
