• 2019: The Year of Technology-led Socio-Economic Transformation for India

Authored by Rajesh Janey, President & Managing Director, India Enterprise, Dell EMC

As 2018 winds down, we look ahead to the possibilities for the coming year. And since we’re inching closer to the next era of human-machine partnership, there has never been a better time to predict how technology-led changes will bring socio-economic transformation to India in 2019.

This year, we saw a rising wave of transformation driven by technical innovations that paved the way for connectedness as well as financial inclusion of a large section of people in the country. Especially, the growing availability of mobile devices and the proliferation of social and Big Data platforms, Artificial Intelligence, and Cloud provided a much-needed fillip to our country’s journey towards digitalization.

Private organizations, academic institutions, financial services industry, and the government have been accelerating innovations around all these technologies. A good case in point is the Artificial Intelligence Task Force, which was formed under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry to define our country’s AI roadmap and advise on making India a major powerhouse of AI in the defense sector, especially in naval, aviation, cyber, land systems, and nuclear,as well as biological warfare.

On the other hand, flagship programs, including Digital India and Make-in-India, are accelerating digital transformation and strengthening the country’s manufacturing sector and are focusing more on leveraging advanced capabilities of machine learning, IoT, AI, and others to build the Industry 4.0 ecosystem in the country.

Amidst all such continuous disruptions, 2019 is likely to see India leapfrogging in its quest for technology-led transformation. As predicted by Gartner, spending on Information Technology in the country will reach a whopping $89.2 billion by 2019, a 6.7 percent rise from the estimated spending of $83.6 billion this year.

So, what’s in store for India in 2019? If I look into a crystal ball, the technology trends affecting India in the new year will be as follows:

Data gold mine will capture the lion’s share in tech investments.

For years, organizations have been accumulating big data. With data volumes reaching 44 Zettabytes by 2020, organizations are believed to be deriving more value from their growing volume of data to gain new insights, which will ultimately lead to new innovations and bring more efficiency to their business processes. So, in 2019,we expect a lot more investments in the management and protection of data – which is now considered as the fuel for AI.

As far as Indian enterprises are concerned, they are increasingly using data-driven analytics throughout their business to propel growth, lessen costs, enhance operational excellence, and even do away with human judgmental errors, like recruitment mistakes. And as forecast by a report, the Indian Big Data technology and service market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 42.37% during the forecast period of 2018-2023. So, come 2019, we will see the momentum of ‘data rush’ growing stronger across industries and sectors.

5G will redefine our life, anyway.

In 2019, the first 5G devices are likely to come to the market, powered by the much-hyped next-generation network, which holds the potentials to redefine the entire data landscape in terms of accessibility and speed. And with high-bandwidth and low-latency networks come more and more connected devices and things—and increased AI, compute and machine learning activities.

As other countries are riding high on their 5G dream, the Indian government is also doing its bit to stay 5G-ready through several initiatives like devising an all-inclusive program to create India-specific 5G applications, setting up national-level 5G events, and so on. In 2019, we will probably see an increase in all such initiatives both at the government and private levels.

At Dell EMC, we are working in tandem with industry leaders to devise how operations, services, and infrastructure will be realized through 5G network transformation and how 5G-ready infrastructure at-scale will be defined and realized to capitalize on new digital service opportunities. And 2019, I believe, will provide us with more opportunities to go ahead with our all such activities around 5G.

Hybrid cloud environment will gain prevalence.

In 2019, the debate around public vs. private cloud will keep losing its strength, as organizations have started realizing the benefits of multi-cloud environments to take care of various types of data that they are processing. If a recent IDC survey is anything to go by, over 80% of organizations migrated all their applications to the private infrastructure in 2017.

In our country, organizations are putting their trust in a hybrid Cloud setup, with the aim of ensuring cost savings and deriving more benefits. As disclosed by a report by Microsoft and research and consulting firm Zinnov, the deployment of Hybrid Cloud at a fixed rate can lead to cost saving up to 30 percent for an organization. So, this cost-saving factor will act as a major catalyst for the growth of hybrid cloud set-up in India in the immediate future.

At Dell EMC, we pride ourselves on our wide portfolio of solutions right from the edge to the core to the cloud. In India, leveraging our services and solutions, comprising software-defined data centers, hyper-converged infrastructures, and multi-cloud platforms, we are empowering organizations to derive more value from their multi-cloud environments as well as IT ecosystems.

Smart cities will make our lifestyle smarter in 2019.

At present, our country is undergoing a huge transformation to emerge as a digitally proficient smart nation. And the smart cities mission has come up with a world of opportunities to capitalize on. I expect that all these smart city projects will propel growth on the back of IoT and other emerging technologies.

We have been working with the Government on smart cities projects for quite some time. We have already partnered with several system integrators as well as application providers who are leveraging our infrastructure stack for various smart solutions. Some illustrious examples include City-wide Garbage tracking and monitoring solution in Mohali, Punjab, the e-classroom project in Indore, storage and compute for city-wide solutions in Ahmedabad, to name a few. So, like this year, we will continue working on these smart cities projects in 2019 as a reliable IT partner.

To put everything in a nutshell

For me, it’s probably the best time for technology—with innovations continuing in AI and Machine Learning, 5G, and cloud. I’m quite upbeat that in 2019 and ahead, India Inc. will unlock more power and potential of data, make the best use of data-driven insights like never before, and transform the business as well as the industry landscape. So, get ready to witness a full-fledged,tech-led transformation era in 2019. And we are now better prepared to contribute to this transformation drive with our wide range of portfolio and of course, our eco-system of partners, strategic alliances and services to serve our customers better.
