• Engines of Human Progress: Technologies and trends that are changing the world

Authored by Srihari Palangala, Sr. Director & Head of Marketing, India, Dell EMC

Over the years, we have seen a wave of transformation led by technology disruptions. Some of these technologies, in fact, disrupted the status quo, transformed the way we live and work, and redefined the global business landscape. The parade of advancements in Big Data and Cloud platforms, mobility devices, and online social platforms buoyed by high-speed networks have promoted social and economic inclusion on the one hand and on the other hand, laid the foundation stone of a promising and potential technological era.

Nevertheless, the coming wave of technological evolution will largely be defined by growing strides in emerging technologies. More specifically, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual and augmented reality (AR and VR), drones, blockchain, and Internet of Things (IoT). And for good reasons, too. According to Gartner, “the ability to use AI to enhance decision-making, reinvent business models and ecosystems, and remake the customer experience will drive the payoff for digital initiatives through 2025.” While for IoT, we’re likely to see its deployment across areas, right from the very intimate such as personal health data to as gigantic as autonomous vehicles and connected systems of street lights, parking meters, and so on. As revealed by a report, by Dell Technologies, titled Realizing 2030, “More than eight in ten (82 percent) leaders expect humans and machines will work as integrated teams within their organization inside of five years (26 percent say their workforce and machines are already successfully working this way).”

With the growing penetration of new-age technologies, organizations have started realizing the immense value and potentials offered by data. And their ability to process a mammoth amount of data and derive rich insights from them holds the key to being successful in this new era. And precisely, this calls for the necessity of having an Innovation Loop. Comprising three core stages—IoT to “Sense,” AI to “Make Sense,” and Collaborative Computing to “Act,” innovation loop paves the way for a new set of interface between humans and machine, thereby making real transformation happen across the society.

    Technology-led transformation in India

Talking from India’s perspective, these emerging technologies are gaining prevalence across areas, right from governments and private organizations to education institutes to healthcare. According to the Dell Technologies Digital Transformation Index 2018, 34% of Indian businesses now are considered as Digital Adopters, stating a 5% rise from 2016.

Another good case in point here is the Artificial Intelligence Task Force—which was formed under the ministry of commerce & industry to devise India’s AI roadmap. Further, flagship programs, including Make-in-India and Digital India, which are aiming at strengthening the country’s manufacturing sector and accelerating its journey to digital transformation, respectively, are all set to capitalize on avant-garde capabilities of IoT, machine learning, AI, robotics, and other new-age technologies to move towards the Industry 4.0 ecosystem. In a recent India-specific survey, PwC delved into the possible impact of AI on decision-makers as well as common people. More than 58% of participants have suggested that AI would help in the cases such as health and well-being, education, cybersecurity, economic growth and so on. On the other hand, 55% of decision-makers admitted that the benefits of AI, including promoting growth and bolstering productivity are likely to outweigh various concerns related to employment. With such positive outlooks, the future of these new-age technologies seems to be bright.

How Dell is riding on the new wave

At Dell Technologies, we’ve already embarked on a journey of adopting and assimilating emerging technologies like AI, AR, and VR, into our products and service offerings. With this initiative, we are now uniquely positioned to enable and support regional organizations—irrespective of their sizes—to adopt and adapt to these technologies and emerge as the engines of human progress.

We are making significant investments in technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence. And the reason is simple. Increasingly, our clients are looking to tap into the potentials offered by these technologies. Given their evolving preference, we are introducing a range of products and services that empower them to optimize on their traditional workloads, without losing the opportunity to leverage cutting-edge workloads, such as AI, analytics, cloud, and blockchain. With us, our consumers will gain access to ‘Ready for VR’ PCs and soon we will lead the market as the first PC manufacturer providing an augmented reality headset.

Dell EMC Ready Solutions for AI is our another breakthrough innovation in line with emerging technologies. These solutions comprise everything you require to speed up all your AI initiatives. Adding ease to AI, our pre-designed and pre-validated solutions are appropriate for machine and deep learning so that our customers can get faster, deeper insights into their customers as well as their business.

We have expanded our capabilities to design around any blockchain so that our customers can transform their business leveraging blockchain technologies. And last but not the least, at the present time, VMware can provide an enhanced enterprise-class blockchain in the market.

    Concluding lines

A new dawn of socio-economical transformation is right on the horizon. Immense possibilities and potentials led by emerging technologies are all set to bring a sea change to the world. We can either grab the mantle and put our best foot forward in leveraging these technologies for betterment or be left behind. After all, in the coming time, the engine of human progress will largely depend on how intelligently we can use the technologies for the progress of our society and businesses, as well.
